So what's the best way to network for someone who is a little shy but still well-liked yet doesn't naturally acclimate to the networking culture? What advice do you have or do you know of a good book that can guide me?

I haven't been necessarily 'active' in meeting new people in college, but that's only because I've yet to develop a strong enough reason to do so. I'm in third year currently and plan on attending law school immediately after I graduate. I've heard that networking is quite important in finding a good job - and I'm sure it is, but if anyone can explain the importance in doing so that would be appreciated as well as answer the primary question. Thanks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated by anyone with law experience. Thanks.

How do you use social networking sites to promote a local business? I am marketing director for a local music instruction business. I would love to harness the power of social networking sites to bring in more customers, but from what I understand, those sites are best used for when you have a business for the online community. (Of course, I understand the HUGE companies using this form of marketing, and those looking for employment... but what about the small, brick and mortar?) What do you all think?

Mobility provides software and wireless equipment to support radio access and core networks. Services provides deployment, maintenance, professional and managed services in support of both our product offerings as well as multi-vendor networks. Beginning in fiscal 2001, the global telecommunications market deteriorated, resulting from a decrease in the competitive local exchange carrier market and a significant reduction in capital spending by established service providers. This trend intensified during fiscal 2002 and continued into fiscal 2003. Reasons for the market deterioration included general economic slowdown, network overcapacity, customer bankruptcies, network build-out delays and limited availability of capital. We believe that the market for telecommunications equipment has stabilized and is starting to grow in certain areas. How do I keep up with software technologies? Like many other software professionals, I have been focusing on a fairly narrow area of the software world . Personally, I've been working with C++ and web based operational challenges. I would very much like to keep apprised of other technologies that are making great progress, some that come to mind are Programming languages (Java, .Net, Ruby, Flash), Web operations and supporting HW, Network technologies and so on. One way to do that is to just learn from area focused books, but that would be extremely time consuming and what I'm looking for is more a long the lines of: high level overviews of what's out there, strength/weaknesses, comparisons and what's used and where. Are there any books, online classes, magazines, web sites, or blogs that would be targetting this sort of knowledge? I realize that it's a moving target, but what isn't in this field? Thanks!
What is the name of the company at brought networking technology to the commercial market? The 4 founders of this company stole the software and hardware designs from the government and built a company that eventually was worth 1.123 billion dollars. One of the founders name is Dennis Fairclough. Dose anyone know the story The 4 founders were originally working for the government's ARPA net at a government contractor. They blackmailed their supervisor and walked out the door with 100 million dollars of government paid research on IP packet switching and DNS resolution software. There is a hidden story here that has never been told. The original company first began to fail for lack of funding, then a big business man came and and bought it up. When this big business man found out about the theft he fired the remaining of the 4 founders. Novell is right, what was it called before Novell? Novell Data Systems began life in 1979 as a computer manufacturer and maker of disk operating systems. In January 1983, Jack Messman and Safeguard Scientifics, a venture capital firm, reincorporated NDSI as Novell, Inc., source: http://www.novell.com/news/press/pressroom/history.html

Thinking of starting my own technology firm (computer networking). What should I need to get started? Besides money, what do you all recommend? Here in town, there is only one competitor. I plan to only hire two to three people, that way I can pay them a good salary and also be able to make a profit for myself. My firm would specialize in networking busineses, repairing their computers. But I mostly want to stay in the networking area. If anyone out there has a technology firm, I would appreciate an estimate of how much your company makes a year, and how much you would pay your employees. Thanks

Is Information Technology (Networking) a good career choice? I have recently finished a diploma in Network Engineering, and have just started a job as a junior network engineer, I was just wondering if this is a good path for an IT career (answers from people in networking and there past experiences would be greatly appreciated). Thanks guys cya! P.S I find networking very interesting, however programming is my down point.
Is there an inherent counter-productive trend with technology focusing on youth and social networking? We used to focus our technology on real, tangible things that we manufactured. The Germans and Japanese still do this, which is why they build the best cars, electronics, household appliances, etc. America seems to make the best Social Networking websites, best cutting edge Youth Culture software and gadgets, and similar stuff from Silicon Valley, and of course we make the best weapons of war. But in between this trivial crap and the weapons of war there is a huge gap that we utterly suck at :( Why did this happen?
Why do so many older adults look down upon IM, texting,Social Networking sites and other related technologies? To preface my question, I am *not* talking about the 40 and over segment of our population, but instead possibly the 25 - 39 set. That said, I'll continue. These folks are quick to embrace their cellular phones, podcasts, business productivity applications, blogging and other hip technologies when it suits them. Yet they look down upon their slightly younger (and sometimes their direct age cohorts) when it comes to the fun side of the internet - instant messaging and social networking. What's so wrong with it, anyways? Their main argument is that it's "all so immature". Over and over I hear only that objection, but few others. Get over it. These medium can be an excellent tool for productivity, because it seems that's all you care about. It isn't just the realm of teenagers anymore, but a widely accepted form of contact and collaboration. It can help you get in touch with friends. You had them once, remember? Back in the hazy mists of time, before you stepped into that cubicle. So stop acting all high-and-mighty. Have fun with life, if you even remember how. And part of a healthy life includes the social aspects as well. So anyone know WHY this is going on? Excellent point - I don't have a problem with 'real time' conversations either, but some of these people act so old, you'd think they were around at the invention of the telephone! They're quite young enough to have used computers in school, and even some of these types of electronic communication. In short, nostalgia is fine, but these folks are too young to have lived through the 'good old days'.
